What Are the Best Apples to Use?

You want an apple that's crisp enough to hold up underneath the peanut butter and chocolate.

Honeycrisp is my favorite because it's crisp, juicy, and naturally sweet.

For a more tart flavor, use Granny Smith. The tart apple with the rich chocolate and peanut butter is an amazing combination.

Other good options include:

  • Pink Lady
  • Fuji
  • Gala
  • Cosmic Crisp

Tips for the Best Apple Dunkers

Pat the apples dry. Apples release a lot of moisture once they're sliced. Patting the surface dry helps everything stick.

Don't slice them too thin. Around ½ inch gives you a sturdy apple ring that won't break when you dunk it.

Use creamy peanut butter. It's much easier to spread evenly over the apple slices.

Don't overheat the chocolate. Melt it gradually and stir frequently so it stays smooth.

Eat them fresh. These are best right after the chocolate sets, while the apples are still extra crisp and juicy.

Easy Topping Ideas

Want to change them up? Before the chocolate sets, try adding:

  • Crushed peanuts
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Chopped pretzels
  • Shredded coconut
  • Crushed graham crackers
  • Halloween sprinkles
  • Chopped almonds
  • Flaky sea salt

You can even set out several toppings and let everyone make their own apple dunkers.

Can I Make Apple Dunkers Ahead of Time?

These are best eaten shortly after they're made because freshly cut apples will eventually begin to brown and release moisture.

If you need to prep them a little ahead of time, lightly brush or toss the apple slices with lemon juice, then pat them completely dry before adding the peanut butter and chocolate.

Store finished apple dunkers covered in the refrigerator until you're ready to serve them.

More Easy Snack Ideas

These Chocolate Peanut Butter Apple Dunkers are proof that you don't need a complicated recipe to make something the whole family wants to eat.

Crisp apples + peanut butter + a thick layer of dark chocolate + sea salt. That's it.

They're especially good during apple season when you come home with way more apples than you know what to do with. 🍎

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples
  • 2 –3 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
  • 1 cup dark chocolate
  • 1 –2 tablespoons coconut butter
  • 1 pinch sea salt

Equipment

  • Apple corer
  • Sharp knife
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking sheet or large plate

Method

Prepare the Apples
  1. Core the apples and slice them crosswise into approximately ½-inch-thick rings.
  2. Pat the apple rings dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture. This helps the peanut butter and chocolate stick to the apples.
Melt the Chocolate
  1. Add the dark chocolate and 1 tablespoon of coconut butter to a microwave-safe bowl.
  2. Microwave in 20–30 second intervals, stirring between each interval, until completely melted and smooth. Add additional coconut butter as needed for a smooth, dippable consistency.
Assemble the Apple Dunkers
  1. Spread a layer of creamy peanut butter over one side of each apple ring.
  2. Dip the peanut butter side of each apple ring into the melted dark chocolate. Spoon or drizzle additional chocolate over the top if desired.
  3. Place the apple dunkers onto a parchment-lined baking sheet or plate and lightly sprinkle with sea salt.
Chill
  1. Place in the freezer for 3–5 minutes, or just until the chocolate has set.
  2. Serve immediately while the apples are cold, crisp, and crunchy.
